Who built Elsinore?
Elsinore was built by Andres, Jaques & Antoul (1893-94) for McMillan of Detroit. The next owner was Mrs. Henry Dimock (nee Susan Whitney) of New York, Boston and Washington, sister of William Whitney, Cleveland’s Secretary of the Navy. He was a New York railway magnate and owner of one of America’s great racing stables.
Susan spent most of her life summering at Elsinore and loved to entertain. Less class-conscious than many of her fellow summer residents, she held soirees, musicales and teas not only for the cream of Bar Harbor society, but for year-round residents as well. Elsinore was demolished about 1945.
