Who lived at Meadowridge?
Parke Godwin, a New York writer and editor, bought Meadowridge in 1885. It had been built in 1881 by Albert Higgins, and was located on Albert Meadow. A free-thinker and ardent abolitionist, Godwin was friends with Horace Greeley, George William Curtis and Charles Dana.
He had a close relationship with his father-in-law, William Cullen Bryant, and edited several volumes of Bryant’s poetry. A large bespectacled man with a mane of white hair and beard, he was fond of his Bar Harbor summers and lingered long after most of the summer people had left. Meadowridge was demolished about 1955.
